Meet Dustin Diaz… every day.

If you’re a reader of the Strobist blog (if you’re not, you should !), you have surely seen this article from David Hobby who interviewed Dustin Diaz about a project which is quite common among photographers : a “365 Project”, which is as you can guess (or not), a one-day-one-photo project running for a total year.
Although many photographers attempt such projects, Dustin adds something more to it :

moving into the 365, the point was not to see if I can push the shutter every 24 hours (that’s easy) but rather to invoke the challenge of being a creative editor. [...] part of the goal of the 365 is to try new things, make mistakes, and do things out of the ordinary.

News and header photo updates

Wow. It’s been a really long time since I last posted here !

I’ve got plenty of projects going on, and although I’d like to keep up posting here more often, I seldom have time to do everything I’d like to do…
However, this week-end was the time for me to update my blog and especially to upload and prepare pages for my header photos from Norway. You can now find them on the Header Photos page, and are of course invited to comment those you like best !

Beside this, what has been keeping me busy those last weeks ?

A walk to Patan

This entry is part of a series, The Nepalese Diary»

April 21, 2008

Since a few days, my girlfriend was feeling a bit down. That’s why she hadn’t come to the Durbar Square. But on the 21st, as she was feeling better, she decided to join Cécile, Emilie and I for a walk to Patan.
Patan is a small city, just next to Kathmandu. As it’s one of the three royal cities of the Valley of Kathmandu, it has got an important Durbar Square as well as an old royal palace. The place is mainly known for the Durbar Square, which features a lot of temples and statues, and that’s what we were willing to see.

First photos with my Photax

So, I tried this old Photax camera I got recently, and I’m really surprised by the results !
I found it a bit difficult to get the proper exposure, so I only kept three photos out of eight, two of them being totally overexposed due to an accidental exposure of the film to sun light…

Here are the photos :

The first one shows what happens when you forget to unscrew the lens… might be a way to get some nice effects :)
The second one is a bit blurry too, I think I hadn’t unscrewed the lens properly. And the last one, although a bit too much contrasted, seems really nice to me and shows great optic capabilities !

Just to mention, no enhancement have been made to these photos.

Guest at xxhxxm !

Two weeks ago, I wrote a post about the xxhxxm project, which features a new diptych each day. It has been initiated by two guys from Café Salé, a french community I’m part of, and after my post they offered me to be their next guest on the project.

Newcomer : Photax IV F

Last week, I found a nice old medium format (6×9cm) camera : a Photax IV F.

I got it for nearly nothing (4€) and after a big cleaning process, it’s ready to shoot again ! I already took some shots which reveal a lens of quite good quality with high contrasts… Maybe too high, but that could come from the processing (which I don’t do myself yet).
The camera has been produced from 1951 to around 1962 by the French company MIOM, which stands for “Manufacture d’Isolants et d’Objets Moulés” : Insulators and Moulded Objects Manufacture. Indeed, to create a nice-looking body at that time, the best way was to mould it. So did MIOM with the Photax line using moulded Bakelite, the plastic of these times.

xxhxxm : where was you today ?

This post is dedicated to a project that really pleases me and which sprang from two “colleagues” from Café Salé : Miaw and Demilliac.

The idea is quite simple, and I’ll quote their own explanations :

The rule is simple: each day, a time and a picture ratio are given. The next day, when that moment comes, we trigger no matter where we are. Later, the pictures are put next to each other to finally be published on this blog exactly (to the very minute) two weeks after their capture.

Discovering Kathmandu : Pashupatinath

This entry is part of a series, The Nepalese Diary»

April 20, 2008

Back to Florence’s place after our tour to the Durbar Square, we met Hélène and Cécile and decided to move to Pashupatinath, as there should be a full moon ceremony taking place near the Bagmati river.

How do Polaroids work ?

Well, that’s not a huge post and I bet I won’t teach anything to a lot of people but I’ve just acquired a Polaroid Spirit 600CL, and so I got interested on how they achieve their magical work of a mini photo lab in a plastic box.
